“As a child, I was enchanted by how the dolls made by my godmother Anna-Liisa magically came to life on the stage of Teatteri Mukamas – and the games continued at home. Her dolls are so beautiful, delicate, and gentle with children,” recalls director Katarina Stycz. Set designer Anna-Liisa Tarvaise’s dolls have been bringing joy to children for decades, both on theater stages and on television.
Teatteri Mukamas” new production for fall 2025, Metsän arvoitus? (The Mystery of the Forest?), will premiere on October 3 at the Pispala Home Theater. The play was written and directed by Katarina Stycz, and the charming puppets were created by Anna-Liisa Tarvainen. This is their first collaboration.
“I admire how Katarina manages to bring the stories to life on stage so gently. The performance is sure to inspire children to play, sing, and make art,” says Anna-Liisa.
Set designer, puppet maker, and art therapist Anna-Liisa Tarvainen was involved in founding Teatteri Mukamas in 1979, where she worked until 2001. When Katarina suggested collaborating in the spring of 2025, Anna-Liisa was delighted. This is how the main characters of the performance, Orava and Jänö, as well as other small forest dwellers, were created.
The gentle and playful soundscape, acoustic instruments, and singing transport the audience on a journey into the forest. The sound design for the performance was created by Ringa Aarimo. The music is performed by actors Liisa Hytti, Karri Karjalainen, and Ella Numminen, who play various instruments and sing.
